On lead guitar and bass a real thin floppy pick makes it harder to control what the tip is doing. There’s exceptions to every rule of course but you should at least get something that’s 1.2mm thick or thicker and give it a try IMO.

Heavier are great for single notes. Really heavy are great for bluegrass flat picking. Also, the tone can change a lot depending on the material.
